Q.
|
How does MyTransPlanner! help my child?
|
A.
|
Like all parents, you want your child to make the most of his or her time in high school so
he or she will be as prepared as possible for life as an adult.
You can use the MyTransPlanner! survey to collect what your child and you are
hoping for your his or her post high school education, training, employment, home life,
and participation in your community. (When you use the MyTransPlanner! survey you
are following a “results-oriented process” to help identify “appropriate
postsecondary goals.”)
You will find that the survey will help you and your child become aware of and discuss
many issues that may affect your child after high school.
You are also collecting information about what your child can already do towards meeting
post secondary goals (this is called an “age appropriate transition assessment”).
With this information and the push of a button, MyTransPlanner! creates a 3-year
plan (also called a “coordinated set of activities”) and summary reports. The
plan is based on your child’s needs, taking into account his or her strengths,
preferences and interests.

Q.
|
How did Wizdom Education get the survey questions for MyTransPlanner!?
|
A.
|
Wizdom Education wrote the questions based on Federal guidelines, best practices
we’ve learned, and what we’ve learned from teachers, kids, and parents.

|
|
|
Q.
|
Okay, my child answered all the questions in the Survey and generated the
Plan. What next?
|
A.
|
You can take the results of completing the MyTransPlanner! survey
– the plan and reports – to your child’s high school special
education TRANSITION – IEP meetings to help do the following:
- Keep the focus on the future – on your child’s life beyond high
school and outside of the classroom walls.
- Keep the focus on improving your child’s academic and functional
achievements and identify your child’s post secondary goals.
- Summarize what your child can do and needs to learn. Identify instruction,
related services, community experiences, and courses of study (included in what is
called “transition services”) needed to assist your child in reaching
your his or her goals.
You may find that the plan and reports may also help your school re-think how they
will serve you and your child to facilitate your child’s movement from
school to post-school activities.

Q.
|
I am a teacher. Can teachers and other school staff use MyTransPlanner!?
|
A.
|
Certainly, and we encourage school and state educational personnel to consider a
school or state license which may cost less to use on a per-student basis.
Also, Wizdom Education can set up MyTransPlanner! to provide schools and
states with additional information.
- For example, transition services available through local community service
providers.
- Or, additional information about formal, standardized age appropriate
transition assessments.
- Or, connections to service providers with information stored in county or
state databases.
For more information on school and state licenses and installation, contact Phil
Vitkus at 630.357.3000 x3004 or
pvitkus@wizdom.com.

Q.
|
I am a parent. Do I let my child answer the questions or do I answer the
questions for him/her?
|
A.
|
The best results for your child will occur when the two of you go through the
survey together. As you do, you can discuss and come to agreement on answers to
the questions. (If you force your opinions on your child, you won’t get the
buy-in you need for him or her to work at school as hard as he or she needs to.)
Especially when it comes to post-secondary (post high school) goals, encourage
your child to express what he or she is looking to do. The best answers are honest
answers.
Do not answer “I don’t know” because that’s the easy
thing to do. However, if “I don’t know” is an honest answer,
then answer a question that way.
For parents of children who are moderately or severely cognitively impaired,
you may find it necessary to answer the questions for your child. As much as
possible, provide answers that reflect your child’s preferences.
